Dove Real Beauty Sketches Film

Dove has been responsible for some incredible campaigns over the years. The “Campaign For Real Beauty” and the fast-forward retouching from a ‘real photograph’ to something suitable for a billboard come to mind immediately.

They’ve long been champions of real beauty, and of getting women to embrace themselves as they are. The next step in this incredibly conceived and beautifully realised campaign was unclear, until now…

Feast your eyes on a three minute masterpiece, created by Dove.

My boy actually showed this to me last night. He found it somewhere online and came over to raise me from my comfy pyjama reverie on the couch. I watched, increasingly open-eyed, as the film unfolded.

I know this is a vehicle for commercialism. I know that what funds these projects is the proceeds of big corporations. But it’s just so darn beautiful. And it’s such a great message.

What do you think? Nailed it or over it?

The Beauty Shakeup – Instagram/Blog Challenge!

It’s a new year, bright, shiny and sparkly and that means it’s time for a new challenge! I had so much fun with 30 Days of Lippy last year and Kimberley from Pop Couture and I have been chatting about a way to up the ante and challenge ourselves (and you) to shakeup the makeup again. Meet The Beauty Shakeup.

#beautyshakeup
Last time we tackled lipstick exclusively, but if you weren’t a lipstick obsessive hoarder lover, like me then you kinda had nowhere to go. So this time around, we wanted to give everyone more freedom and get as many people involved as possible. So we’ve broadened the shake up criteria. You’ve got one keyword per day to prompt your look. Take Day 5, for example “Bold” – you can choose to interpret that as a bold lipstick, a bold eye makeup look, a bold manicure… or even a bold hairstyle. Ultimately the list lends itself to beauty, but if fashion is more your thing, you can join in with your daily outfit too!

Let yourself get inspired, create a look based on the word of the day, then photograph it and post it to Instagram with the hashtag #BeautyShakeUp so we can all delight in your creation. You can even blog about your look, review the product in question or do a weekly highlights package (don’t you just love those?!) Whatever floats your boat!

If you do blog/vlog about the challenge, please let me know by commenting here or over at Pop Couture, Kimberley’s killer blog.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with. Stay connected with us on Instagram @rosemaryslade & @popcouturist.

{ Editor’s note: Day 14′s prompt is matte and Day 15′s prompt is pink, however we realise that Day 14 is also Valentine’s Day, so anyone wishing to switch days 14 & 15 so they can wear pink for V Day, please do!}

Summer Tanning Essentials

We’ve been talking about tanning a bit lately, and I’ve had a few people ask about my prep and post-spray tan routine. Keeping an awesome spray tan looking fab isn’t hard work, but it does require a few killer products.

Summer Tanning EssentialsThese are my must-haves for keeping my salon spray tan looking amazing, and a few really rad home-tanning products of which I am also a fan-girl. From left to right, please meet:

Loving Tan Easy-To-Reach back applicator – perfect for that spot right in the middle of your back that you just can’t reach, no matter what ridiculous positions you manage to get yourself into. Forget the boy, this baby has got you covered.

Vani-T Brazilian Bronze 1 hour Self Tan Mousse – if I tan at home, this is my favourite. It gives a beautiful deep bronze colour that’s super-speedy developing. I leave it on for between four and five hours for a really natural colour.

Le Tan Instant Face Tan – Formulated specially for the delicate skin on your face (which can react to the DHA in tanning solution), this develops slowly and depending on the level of colour you want, may require a few applications. Big fan. And it smells like caramel.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion – A must-have for the Aussie sun. I love the fresh scent and the dry-touch finish. No greasy stricky sunscreen for me thanks!

Palmers Olive Butter Formula Cream Oil - cannot. rave. about this. enough. It packs the punch of a body oil, but without the slick factor. The moisturiser component means that the oil soaks right into your skin. It has a fresh, ‘mens beauty product’ scent, with high notes of lemon and a hint of mint.

ModelCo Tan Extender/Gradual Tan Everyday Body Moisturiser: Fantabulous for extending the life of your tan. With a touch of DHA, it’s a moisturiser and gradual tanner in one. It’ll keep your glow looking fresh.

Skinny Tan Pre-Tan Primer: Absolutely addicted to this stuff. I buff my old tan off with a Tan-Off Mitt (excluded from this photo because it’s currently drying) but I then do a full body scrub with this stuff. It’s a creamy, coconut-scented body scrub which not only removes any final traces of tan, but polishes your skin to a baby-soft, glowing finish. And it doesn’t leave any residue, so it ensures optimum tanning results. Even if you don’t tan, you should go buy this. It’s awesome.

What are your favourite summer beauty products? Let me know!

Meet The Uber Tan – Best. Spray Tan. Ever!

I’m a dedicated fake tanner. I love a good faux glow. But I don’t like to look like I’m wearing a fake tan, I mean, does anyone?! I want to look naturally tanned! It’s taken me a while to find one that’s so fab that I don’t have to even think about it. Just book it once a week and enjoy the rest of your summer, thank you very much!

I always kind of felt like I was going with the ‘best available’ until the next thing came along, constantly chopping and changing (and even mixing them together) in the quest for something better. But I’ve discovered it. The holy grail. The ÜBER TAN.

Minx Tan at DMK Skin Meet my favourite summer discovery: Minx Tan, available at DMK Skin in Sydney’s Crows Nest. Not only is it a super-natural colour, but depending on the level of tanning you’re looking for, you can wash it off in between 2 and 6 hours. The beautiful Elisha at Danné Montague King in Crows Nest did my tan for me. And I’ve now booked her in for the rest of the decade!

Minx Tan The Super Fake Tan at DMK Skin Crows Nest
The difference, I’m told (and it’s visible almost immediately once you’ve been sprayed) is the addition of both green and purple base colours. “Base colours are added to counteract and neutralise the skin tone when exposed to DHA. On the colour spectrum, green is opposite to orange, so green is used to counteract brassy ‘orange’ tones which can occur,” the fabulous people at Minx Tan tell me. “Purple will assist in neutralising shades of yellow. Additionally, a purple hue will create a deeper and more natural-looking faux tan that is suitable for all skin tones.”

Minx Tan The Uber Tan at DMK Skin Crows Nest 2 The tanning liquid is non-sticky, it dries within minutes, even after two or more coats, AND it’s fragrance free (no icky tanning smell.) Minx have created their unique formulas with over 90% natural and organic ingredients like Hawaiian Sea Extract, Sea Kelp, Aloe Vera and Pro Vitamins, meaning they’re gentle on your skin, hydrating and your tan lasts heeeeaps longer!

Minx Tan the backI’ve chosen the deepest colour available, Eclipse, but the tan also comes in a light and medium shade as well. See how even around the elbows it doesn’t look orange? Swooon!

Minx Tan The Uber Tan Fake Tan at DMK Skin Crows Nest Which means I, can enjoy the rest of my summer, grab any opportunity to jump into a photo, show off my tan and spend more time doing important things like taking silly selfies in the car ;)

Much silliness and photo taking now possible! To book YOUR Minx Tan in Sydney, phone Danné Montague King (DMK Skin) in Crow’s Nest on 1300 007 546. Tans are available between 9-5pm Monday to Friday. Run, don’t walk!

Sephora and what I bought there

You know how they refer to Disneyland as ‘The Magic Kingdom’? Sephora should be called that too. I would also be quite content to dub it The Happiest Place on Earth. The fact that the first Sephora I visited was actually inside Downtown Disneyland made it all the more magical.

Not only does the name deserve to be up in lights, but it should have an exclamation mark too.

Sephora! *jazz hands*

I’d run out of quite a few things before I left for the US and stubbornly refused to replace them (I actually lived without concealer and powder for several weeks. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty). So I had a bit of a list.

I was like a kid at, erm… Disneyland.

Let me paint a picture for you: I stepped across the threshold, eyes darting around at the enormous (yet perfectly ordered) selection, my brain vaguely cataloguing brand names and locations as I went.

It’s like Mecca Cosmetica and the entire beauty floor of David Jones had a baby. And it got all the best genes.

I spent a solid hour browsing. I could have spent so much longer, but both the boy and his brother were waiting patiently and we did have a room check-out to make.

I didn’t get everything on my list, but I did do well. And picked up a few other things too.

Many of these were things I actually needed. Some were things I didn’t know I needed. Others were things I needed and so much more. Yet others were duplicates of things I needed.

(Meh… who among you wouldn’t try two different brands of black eyeliner?)

And then, of course, I splurged a little — as one does when on vacation — and grabbed a few things that I was all wanty for as well.

Alterna Caviar Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner.

An essential buy because I was about to run out of both and was concerned I would have trouble finding hair care products that were free of sulfates and parabens (necessary as I have Great Lengths extensions and these ingredients aren’t good for the bonds.)

BareMinerals Ready Foundation SPF 20 in Golden Tan, Benefit Boi-ing Concealer in 03.

Both necessities. Although I didn’t buy the BareMinerals powder foundation to be a foundation, it was intended as a replacement for my M.A.C Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder.

My helpful Sephora assistant colour matched me perfectly and pointed out that not only would it work as a powder, but it would also add more coverage. Helpful, as sometimes my foundation thins out a bit, around my lips, especially.

I was in desperate need of a new concealer. The Benefit Boi-ing won because I’ve heard great things about it and it was a perfect colour match.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black (of which Who What Wear said “We’ve finally tracked down the perfect liquid eyeliner!” — stay tuned for my review soon) and Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes Eyeliner in 0L (matte black).

I know, it’s hard to believe I let myself almost run out of black eyeliner. *gasp*

I was using a liquid liner over the top of a dark purple M.A.C liner during my last week or so in Australia.

A special thank you to Kimmi at The Plastic Diaries and Tara of Keeping Up With Me for introducing me to MUFE Aqua Eyes (and for reminding me to buy it.) I am in love.

Those of you who have been paying attention will know how obsessed I am with YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain – which I already own in 12, Corail Fauve – the plan was to buy every shade available when I got to the US.

On my first trip to Sephora though, since it was still within the first few days of my month-long holiday, I happily swatched away until I found another shade I absolutely fell in love with.

Please meet YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain in 7 – Corail Aquatique. Swatches & review to come.

I’ve been obsessing over metallic nails for at least six months, so I was so happy to find these! Left is Sephora by OPI Trend Tips in Ornate (silver) and right is Sephora Nail Patch Art in A12 Gold Circles.

Michael Kors Gold – Rose Edition EDP 30ml.

“New Fragrances” was written on my beauty shopping list. I had a few ideas of which ones I wanted. This was not one of them. (Mainly because I didn’t know it existed.)

One spritz and I was sold. It had my name written all over it. (Plus, it actually had my name written all over it.)

I also loved the idea of wearing a brand new fragrance the entire time we were away. Scent can be such a powerful memory trigger, so I wanted a fragrance that would remind me of travelling around America.

Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find this fragrance anywhere in Australia (aside from on eBay.) I hope it eventually makes it to our shores.

Mini Sephora Makeup Be Gone Triple Action Cleansing Water.

Impulse buy… Near the register.

Also I forgot to bring my own makeup remover, Bioderma Créaline Micellear Water, which I’m still totally addicted to.

Total spend just over $270.00 US. Which I thought was a pretty darn good effort.

So lovelies, it’s my first Sephora haul. How did I do? Have you tried any of these products? Let me know!

Love,
Rosie xox

YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stain Review + Photos

Lipgloss girls and ladies, get excited! There’s a new gloss in town. She’s kicking ass and taking names. YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stain is a lip stain, lipgloss hybrid. “It combines the texture and shine of a gloss with the long-wear of a stain for a truly innovative lip product. A lightweight texture that immediately melts onto lips,” say the lovely people at YSL. And they’re right! This is a revolution people. And I’m not talking one-small-step-for-lipgloss. I’m talking one GIANT leap for ladies (and their lips) everywhere. This product is genius.

I’ve been lusting after it ever since I heard it was coming. Then I saw it reviewed in the August edition of SHOP til You Drop magazine, and I knew it was something special. (Seriously, how addictive is that magazine?!) I tried to wait until my upcoming US trip to purchase, but gave myself a break. I *needed* this! Like, now.

The David Jones store I stopped into didn’t have a huge selection of colours, but this shade — 12 — aka Corail Fauve (which translates roughly to “tawny” or “fawn” coral… I think) really caught my eye. In the store, it looked almost orange. But once on my lips, it gave a gorgeous glossy beestung look that I just couldn’t pass up. Once I got home, I realised it was much pinker than I thought, but I have absolutely no complaints. It’s a stunning shade! A light application gives a soft flush of reddish pink colour, with a light, naturally glossy finish, but you can layer it up for fuller coverage, a deeper colour and much much higher gloss shine. When layered, this shade is almost strawberry red on me.

Here’s a light layer

And here it is layered up

And the last factor? Oh! The last factor! I applied mine at 7:00 in the morning, and five hours later, when I pressed my lips together, they were still buttery and glossy. Granted, I hadn’t actually eaten anything, so it wasn’t put under too much pressure, but even after lunch the colour remained strong and vibrant. After the gloss gradually disappears (which honestly takes such a long time that you’ll probably forget you’re even timing it) a stunning, deep stain still remains.

And the real kicker? It’s NOT sticky! At all. And I know almost every lipgloss on the planet claims to be ‘not sticky’ — but this one actually isn’t. At all. It’s brilliant!

I am smitten. SMITTEN I say! I want every single shade. Luckily I’m off to the US in just over two days. And this is most certainly on my shopping list!

What’s your favourite new purchase at the moment? Let me know!

Did you enjoy this post? If so, please share!

Rosie xox

New in this week

I’ve been on a bit of a spending ban tight budget lately, since I paid for my flights and accommodation for my month long trek around the United States. I’m trying to keep to essentials only, which is rather difficult for someone who tends to buy things based on excitement, love, hype, the fact that I “neeeeed it” and the sheer unadulterated joy of having something new.

But these are a few little lovelies that I picked up this week. The FCUK shorts just screamed “wear me in California” — making them an essential travel buy, the Sugar Baby Tan Enhancing Shimmer Oil was a smart purchase, it does two jobs in one: moisturise and tan enhance (I’m already churning through it) and the pastel polishes and floral print nail file were part of a seriously awesome gift bag from the incredibly talented ladies at Hello Darling.

I’m very lucky to work in a job where magazines are ‘research’. This Vogue cover simply knocked my socks off, Lana Del Rey looks positively ethereal, yet somehow has a sense of the girl-next-door. Kurv magazine is a new discovery: I am blown away. Their shoots alone have offered many hours of contented swooning and inspiration.

The MAC Lipglass was a belated birthday gift from my beautiful friend Sarah, she chose “The Wee Coquette” because she knew I was lusting after a soft pink shade to add depth and shine to my pout. Finally, the YSL Rouge Pur Couture, I must admit… I purchased myself. Gasp! I tried to restrain myself. And I succeeded for several weeks. But I just couldn’t wait any longer to try this miracle lipgloss. And I was certainly not disappointed. In fact, I’m ecstatic. A review will follow soon. As will enthusiastic purchasing of every shade available the minute I hit US soil.

Happy start-of-the-week lovelies, I hope you all have an amazing one!

Face of Australia Sheer Gloss Lip Crayons

I’m a lipgloss girl. Shiny? Colourful? Gimme gimme gimme! I’ve had my eye on these Limited Edition Lip Crayons from Face of Australia for months, and finally I was very kindly gifted them by my beautiful friend Samantha, for the SS Beauty Swap. The packaging is slightly reminiscent of the fifties, a little bit kitschy, it almost reminds me of Benefit’s funky packaging.

The unboxing is all part of the fun. Each crayon is stamped with a picture representing the name of the colour. More cuteness!

The all-important ingredients, and below the crop mark here, are the very important words “not tested on animals”.
I found the lip crayons fairly easy to apply. Being a crayon, it’s easy to apply right out to your lip line and easy to scribble on to fill in your lips. The formula is very moisturising, with a glossy finish that is actually not sticky. I know, I’ve heard it a million times before too, but this one actually isn’t sticky. My only gripe is that for me, the colour was rather difficult to get even. Whether it’s the applicator, or the formula, or just my uneven lips… I’m not sure. But I find it a bit of a challenge. The lip crayons smell like vanilla, which is my favourite fragrance. I love it when lip products don’t smell like lip products!

The above swatches are (from left): Sundae, Cupcake, Macaron, taken without a flash in natural light. These swatches, I feel, are quite a good representation of the colours. And below, are the lips.

Above: Cupcake on my lips. This is probably the crayon that I’ve used the most. The colour is a very pretty soft pink, which leans towards the cool side but still looks good on my warm skin tone. It’s natural enough to wear to work, or on the weekend, but gives enough colour to make you look polished, and like you’ve made an effort. This shot was taken in natural light, with no flash, and I feel is a good representation of the colour.

Above: Sundae on my lips. This is the perfect example of a “my lips but better” colour. I was a bit apprehensive at first, since the colour of the crayon actually looks quite brown (a colour I tend to steer clear of) but once it’s on, it’s actually quite a pretty rosy brown, which blends in with my natural lip pigment to create a lovely rosy, glossy pout. I found this colour the most difficult to get even on my lips, but once you’ve outlined your lips, a soft scribbling motion seems to work best to fill them in.

Above: Macaron on my lips. This was a surprise. I tend to think of any shade of red as being a “special occasion” colour. But the pinkish undertone, and soft glossy finish definitely make this an all-rounder. I’ve worn it to work, out for drinks and it always gets compliments. It’s a little brighter than my standard lipgloss choices, which is probably why it works for me. Again, the above shot was taken in natural light with no flash and represents the colour quite well, I feel.

In terms of lasting, I was pretty surprised. Glosses tend to disappear pretty quickly on me. Partially because I’m a lip biter and probably partially because I have dry lips that tend soak all the moisture up. But these crayons did pretty well. Last-wise, you’re looking at a solid 2 hours of gloss and around another hour of nice soft colour. I found that when I ate or drank anything, it was find more that the gloss and colour in the centre of the lips that disappeared. You could get away with a quick redistribution of the colour, by rubbing your lips together, but the colour isn’t nearly as strong and the finish just isn’t the same. They’re so easy and so much fun to reapply, it’s better to just reach for a mirror and get your pout back to perfect ASAP.

So a thumbs up to Face of Australia Limited Edition Sheer Gloss Lip Crayons from me, especially if you’re a gloss girl, you’ll love them. The ease of application makes them perfect for on-the-go touch ups. The difficulty with getting the colour even is my only issue. RRP is $14.95 and they’re available from Priceline, Big W, Kmart and selected pharmacies.

So lovelies, have you discovered any new lip glosses lately? Have you tried these lip crayons? What did you think?

Oooh, and guess what? I have a super DOOPER new product, which I can’t wait to share. It’s become my new favourite lipgloss. Stay tuned, review and pics will be up soon!

Love,
Rose xox

Adventures in Portrait-Land or “How I ended up in front of the camera”

I’m a huge fan of iPhoneography. And selfies. And Instagram. Seriously, I live to snap. But there’s something super special about having your portait taken by a professional photographer. And having your hair and makeup done professionally too. Which was why when I got the opportunity to participate in a Portrait Couture session with Simona Janek of gm photographics, I jumped at the chance. I just got the images back — and I’m oh-so-breathlessly happy with them! I just couldn’t wait to share. We shot four different “looks” (there are more pics to come) and strangely enough, my favourite series of images is the one where Simona and I allowed ourselves a bit more freedom in the brief and what the finished product would look like.

I had simply said “I want it to be more free” and sent her one of my favourite Pinterest boards, Daydreams & Whimsy, as inspiration. Simona was incredible in getting me to move: at times I almost felt like I was dancing, at others I felt like a mime, and at yet others I felt quite awkward. I know myself when I’m trying to get a decent shot for Instagram or twitter, I can take loads before I get a good one, so the fact that Simona did all this with me (read: totally awkward and definitely-not-a-model) was even more impressive.

During the shoot, I became hyper-aware of my body, the way I was standing and what I was doing with my face. I’m certain that I had my directions backwards for almost the entire session, since Simona kept using the phrase “your other left”, but we got there in the end. I am so happy with the finished product, it’s wonderful to have actual prints in my hands for a change… and I picked up a few little tricks for posing for the camera too!

* Relax your face by smiling softly, or by blowing some air out through your lips
* Keep your body at an angle to the camera and put your weight on your back foot to slim down your hips
* Hold your head level, then drop your chin and push it forward. It’s a bit like impersonating a turtle, but it enlogates the neck and gets rid of a potential double chin
* If you’re sitting, scoot forwards on the chair a bit to make your legs look longer
* The good old hand on the hip is a favourite for a reason: it draws the eye towards your waist, ultimately stretching you out.

Wearing: White Dress – Thrifted, Floral Garland – by Adrienne, Nails – Face of Australia Pro Colour Nail Enamel in Cool Cotton.

For more info, or to book your beautiful selves into a Portrait Couture session of your very own, check out the Portrait Couture website. I highly recommend it, it’s a wonderful treat, perfect for a gift, or a “just because” reason to spoil yourself.

Happy Friday all, I hope you have an amazing weekend!
Love,
Rosie xox

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

Oh the last few days of Autumn and the first few days of Spring are just so delicious aren’t they? Gradually you stop reaching for your big woolly coat, those fun, floral prints work their way back into your wardrobe, your makeup becomes more fun, and you daydream of long days spent picnic-ing in the park or lazing on the sand as the waves roll in. It seems like ages since I’ve done a Face of the Day (that’s what the abbreviation “FOTD” means, for anyone who doesn’t actually write a beauty blog.) Actually looking back it hasn’t been THAT long, but still… This is a makeup look I’ve been wearing a bit lately, it feels fresh, fun and most certainly spring-worthy!

A lot of people have been asking me to do a “how-to” post on this particular look, so here it is guys: An easy peasy spring makeup look!

1. SKIN: Skin was prepped with Face of Australia Face Base Primer, then I applied Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation in Medium/Deep with my fingers, warming it first, before spreading it onto my skin. I followed with a light dusting of MAC Cosmetics Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder. I used quite a stiff powder brush to then dust Dior Amber Diamond Highlighter onto my cheekbones, nose, and just above my brows. Then buffed the foundation over with the same powder brush. A little highlighter in the cupid’s bow above your lips never goes astray either.

2. EYES: Using the MAC Colour Added Eyeshadow Quad, from the Shop MAC range, I washed “Laundry Daze” on the inner corner of my eyes across the lid to about halfway. Then using “Self Serve” I filled in the outer corner, swept it into the crease and up towards the brow bone. I double lined my eyes, first with Australis StayPut Liner in Black, then with Smiink Eyeliner Pen in Black/Noir, flicking it out beyond my lashline a little. I finished by curling my lashes and applying a coat of Face of Australia Impact Curl Mascara — starting by placing the brush at the base of my lashes and zig-zagging it to get some product build up for added hold — then sweeping the brush upwards through my lashes. Two coats minimum, and then combed through with a final coat of Maybelline’s The Falsies Flared Mascara just on the tips of the lashes for good measure. Then blended the shadows out to remove the harsh edges.

3. BROWS: Using a q-tip dipped in makeup remover, I swiped it across my brows to remove any foundation residue, then combed my brows into place. I tamed and filled with SAX Cosmetics Perfect Brow Shaping Kit (awesome, awesome product, go and buy it now)!

4. CHEEKS: Rimmel London’s Sun Shimmer Matte Bronzing Powder works really well as a contour as well, I used the Medium shade for this look in the hollow underneath my cheekbones, across the top of my forehead near my hairline, under my jawline and down the bridge of my nose. NARS Blush in Sin provides a beautiful soft, berry pink glow on the apples of the cheeks.

5. LIPS: Face of Australia Sheer Gloss Crayon in Cupcake

6. HAIR: Bed hair by my bed

Has the warmer weather inspired you to change your makeup or your wardrobe? What changes have you made? Let me know!

Love,
Rosie
