Summer Tanning Essentials

We’ve been talking about tanning a bit lately, and I’ve had a few people ask about my prep and post-spray tan routine. Keeping an awesome spray tan looking fab isn’t hard work, but it does require a few killer products.

Summer Tanning EssentialsThese are my must-haves for keeping my salon spray tan looking amazing, and a few really rad home-tanning products of which I am also a fan-girl. From left to right, please meet:

Loving Tan Easy-To-Reach back applicator – perfect for that spot right in the middle of your back that you just can’t reach, no matter what ridiculous positions you manage to get yourself into. Forget the boy, this baby has got you covered.

Vani-T Brazilian Bronze 1 hour Self Tan Mousse – if I tan at home, this is my favourite. It gives a beautiful deep bronze colour that’s super-speedy developing. I leave it on for between four and five hours for a really natural colour.

Le Tan Instant Face Tan – Formulated specially for the delicate skin on your face (which can react to the DHA in tanning solution), this develops slowly and depending on the level of colour you want, may require a few applications. Big fan. And it smells like caramel.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion – A must-have for the Aussie sun. I love the fresh scent and the dry-touch finish. No greasy stricky sunscreen for me thanks!

Palmers Olive Butter Formula Cream Oil - cannot. rave. about this. enough. It packs the punch of a body oil, but without the slick factor. The moisturiser component means that the oil soaks right into your skin. It has a fresh, ‘mens beauty product’ scent, with high notes of lemon and a hint of mint.

ModelCo Tan Extender/Gradual Tan Everyday Body Moisturiser: Fantabulous for extending the life of your tan. With a touch of DHA, it’s a moisturiser and gradual tanner in one. It’ll keep your glow looking fresh.

Skinny Tan Pre-Tan Primer: Absolutely addicted to this stuff. I buff my old tan off with a Tan-Off Mitt (excluded from this photo because it’s currently drying) but I then do a full body scrub with this stuff. It’s a creamy, coconut-scented body scrub which not only removes any final traces of tan, but polishes your skin to a baby-soft, glowing finish. And it doesn’t leave any residue, so it ensures optimum tanning results. Even if you don’t tan, you should go buy this. It’s awesome.

What are your favourite summer beauty products? Let me know!

Meet The Uber Tan – Best. Spray Tan. Ever!

I’m a dedicated fake tanner. I love a good faux glow. But I don’t like to look like I’m wearing a fake tan, I mean, does anyone?! I want to look naturally tanned! It’s taken me a while to find one that’s so fab that I don’t have to even think about it. Just book it once a week and enjoy the rest of your summer, thank you very much!

I always kind of felt like I was going with the ‘best available’ until the next thing came along, constantly chopping and changing (and even mixing them together) in the quest for something better. But I’ve discovered it. The holy grail. The ÜBER TAN.

Minx Tan at DMK Skin Meet my favourite summer discovery: Minx Tan, available at DMK Skin in Sydney’s Crows Nest. Not only is it a super-natural colour, but depending on the level of tanning you’re looking for, you can wash it off in between 2 and 6 hours. The beautiful Elisha at Danné Montague King in Crows Nest did my tan for me. And I’ve now booked her in for the rest of the decade!

Minx Tan The Super Fake Tan at DMK Skin Crows Nest
The difference, I’m told (and it’s visible almost immediately once you’ve been sprayed) is the addition of both green and purple base colours. “Base colours are added to counteract and neutralise the skin tone when exposed to DHA. On the colour spectrum, green is opposite to orange, so green is used to counteract brassy ‘orange’ tones which can occur,” the fabulous people at Minx Tan tell me. “Purple will assist in neutralising shades of yellow. Additionally, a purple hue will create a deeper and more natural-looking faux tan that is suitable for all skin tones.”

Minx Tan The Uber Tan at DMK Skin Crows Nest 2 The tanning liquid is non-sticky, it dries within minutes, even after two or more coats, AND it’s fragrance free (no icky tanning smell.) Minx have created their unique formulas with over 90% natural and organic ingredients like Hawaiian Sea Extract, Sea Kelp, Aloe Vera and Pro Vitamins, meaning they’re gentle on your skin, hydrating and your tan lasts heeeeaps longer!

Minx Tan the backI’ve chosen the deepest colour available, Eclipse, but the tan also comes in a light and medium shade as well. See how even around the elbows it doesn’t look orange? Swooon!

Minx Tan The Uber Tan Fake Tan at DMK Skin Crows Nest Which means I, can enjoy the rest of my summer, grab any opportunity to jump into a photo, show off my tan and spend more time doing important things like taking silly selfies in the car ;)

Much silliness and photo taking now possible! To book YOUR Minx Tan in Sydney, phone Danné Montague King (DMK Skin) in Crow’s Nest on 1300 007 546. Tans are available between 9-5pm Monday to Friday. Run, don’t walk!

New in this week

I’ve been on a bit of a spending ban tight budget lately, since I paid for my flights and accommodation for my month long trek around the United States. I’m trying to keep to essentials only, which is rather difficult for someone who tends to buy things based on excitement, love, hype, the fact that I “neeeeed it” and the sheer unadulterated joy of having something new.

But these are a few little lovelies that I picked up this week. The FCUK shorts just screamed “wear me in California” — making them an essential travel buy, the Sugar Baby Tan Enhancing Shimmer Oil was a smart purchase, it does two jobs in one: moisturise and tan enhance (I’m already churning through it) and the pastel polishes and floral print nail file were part of a seriously awesome gift bag from the incredibly talented ladies at Hello Darling.

I’m very lucky to work in a job where magazines are ‘research’. This Vogue cover simply knocked my socks off, Lana Del Rey looks positively ethereal, yet somehow has a sense of the girl-next-door. Kurv magazine is a new discovery: I am blown away. Their shoots alone have offered many hours of contented swooning and inspiration.

The MAC Lipglass was a belated birthday gift from my beautiful friend Sarah, she chose “The Wee Coquette” because she knew I was lusting after a soft pink shade to add depth and shine to my pout. Finally, the YSL Rouge Pur Couture, I must admit… I purchased myself. Gasp! I tried to restrain myself. And I succeeded for several weeks. But I just couldn’t wait any longer to try this miracle lipgloss. And I was certainly not disappointed. In fact, I’m ecstatic. A review will follow soon. As will enthusiastic purchasing of every shade available the minute I hit US soil.

Happy start-of-the-week lovelies, I hope you all have an amazing one!

5 ways to combat the “blahs”

I’ve had a rough week. I’ve had a ghastly flu and been burderned with what my doctor referred to as “nuclear strength antibiotics”. You know those days when you just feel blah? Most mornings I walk out of the house feeling confident and amazing, but some days seem dull and drab before they’ve even begun. Luckily, I’ve developed a system for combatting blah, dull and drab. Here are my top 5 ways to pull yourself out of a blah day.

1. Wash and blow-dry (or straighten or curl) your hair. It will look fresh and shiny and smell amazing. Most of the time I am a dry shampoo addict and boy howdy it’s good stuff, but sometimes you just need supermodel hair. Favourite products: Moroccanoil Treatment Light $27.50 / 25ml, KMS California Free Shape Hot Flex Spray $31.95 / 200ml.

2. Fake bake it. There is nothing quite like a tan to make you feel glamorous, slim and sexy. But as we all know, real ones are terribly bad for us and so (hopefully) you’ve discovered the beauty of a faux glow. I’m a dedicated tanner in summer: I do a full scrub and application once a week, and a top-up application after a few days. In winter I’m lazier about it, but a gorgeous golden glow is sure to perk me up any day. Favourite products: Le Tan Fast Tan Mousse in Deep Bronze $12.99, Vani T Liquid Sunshine $28.95 and for those days where you can’t be bothered doing a full scrub and tan… Le Tan Flawless Legs Body Makeup is a lifesaver $17.99.

3. Be illuminating! An illuminator or highlighter is makeup’s answer to flat, dull and blah. It’s kind of like having your own personal lighting specialist follow you around every. single. second. Sweep a little across the high points of your face (that is: the bridge of your nose, tops of your cheekbones near the temple, on your forehead just above your brows and if you really feel super blah, dot a little in the inner corner of each eye – it makes your eyes look brighter -  and in your cupid’s bow, which is the hollow above your top lip.) Sneaky secret? Mix a liquid illuminator into your foundation for an all-over heavenly glow. Favourite products: Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator in Angel Mist $14.95 and M.A.C Mineralise Skin Finish in Lightscapade $47.00.

4. Wear a bright(er) lipstick. One thing that’s bound to put you in a good mood and put some colour in your face is a great bright lipstick. I’m pretty obsessed with some of the great corals out there at the moment. The great thing about coral is it’s like pink and orange had a baby together, which means it suits both warm and cool skintones! Coral is the perfect pick-me-up for mid-week. But if you’re after something a little more wow for the weekend, go for a deep fiery red or a boom-smash orange. Favourite products: Maybelline Colour Sensational Lipcolour in Coral Fire $16.95, Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss in Besotted $39.00 and Shop M.A.C Lipstick in Watch Me Simmer $36.00.

5. Give yourself a statement mani. There’s nothing quite like having fabulous nails. It gives you that extra bit of wow factor, it’s a conversation starter and it’s likely to get you noticed. I always get compliments when I choose a bright or unique nail colour. Plus, there’s something about having hands that look great that’s a real confidence booster. Neon yellow, bright orange, pretty pink with a glitter feature nail (like the one here) or a parade of pastel colours on your fingers (like here). Statement nails are a big blah-buster! Favourite products: Revlon Top Speed Nail Enamel in Electric and Pink Lingerie $15.95, OPI Nail Polishes in Pamplona Purple and Jade is the New Black $19.95, Sportsgirl Nail It! in Ginger $7.95, Face of Australia ProNail Enamel in Cool Cotton $6.95 and Barbados Nail Enamel in Another Daquiri Please $4.95.
Do you have a system or a great way to combat the “blahs”? Any parts of your beauty routine that instantly perk you up? Will you be trying any of my tips? Let me know!

Happy Friday!

A Glossy Box of Goodies

Imagine if you got a goodie bag once a month. Guaranteed. And delivered to your doorstep. That’s how I see beauty boxes. As a swoon-worthy, beautifully wrapped box of goodies! There’s some debate in beauty blogging circles as to their usefulness and value. But I personally love them! And if you’re not a beauty blogger and you don’t work for one of the big glossy magazines (and are therefore not accustomed to goodie bags on a regular basis), I honestly think you’ll love them too. So when the gorgeous ladies at Glossybox asked if I’d like to try their March box, I jumped at the chance.

I adore mail. Even more, I adore pretty mail! And you can’t get much prettier than Glossybox. Not only is it pretty, it’s really big! I actually let out a squeal of delight when the somber postal worker handed me my mail on the weekend. The ‘unboxing’ is a task to be relished. Savour the box, the ribbon and the perfectly packaged tissue paper.

This box is destined for my gift-wrapping cupboard, to be bestowed upon someone special with a lovely surprise inside.

The box comes with a handy little guide, offering additional information on the products enclosed.

And you’ll also find extra information (and even the occasional special offer) from some of the beauty brands involved. Who doesn’t love a discount?

First impression? Wowzers! It’s absolutely packed! And all the products are good sizes too! I know bigger doesn’t necessarily equal better, but it feels like there’s a lot in here. My first product sample was a full-sized (100g) Dencorub Extra Strength Heat Gel.

Not necessarily technically a beauty product, but in my house this went straight into regular rotation. I’m an exercise junkie. I cycle and lift weights at least three times a week and I’ve been using Tiger Balm to sooth my tired biceps and deadline induced neck pain. This is SO much better. It works faster and it smells much nicer too. Mmmm menthol-y!

Next up, a 150g Proactiv Cleansing Bar. I’m pretty picky about what products go near my face, but I decided to give this a try anyway. Salicylic Acid is a key ingredient and it’s great for clearing blocked pores and gently exfoliating. I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t dry my skin too much and left my face feeling refreshed and clean, without that ghastly tight feeling.

On my schedule, I practically worship dry shampoo. This one is an extra-gentle spray, which is handy for super quick application. Spray, brush and go. It actually left my hair quite glossy and deliciously voluminous. Dry shampoo is also super-handy for dirtying up freshly washed hair and adding a big of va-va-voom. This will definitely get used quickly.

KMS California is one of my favourite brands for hair products. Free Shape is a heat protector spray and heat styling aid. (Brownie points for doing double duty.) This little baby is ah-may-zing! My straightener just glided through my hair, which has never looked so glossy, felt so soft or looked so smooth and shiny after an at-home straightening. This gem is now sitting proudly among my regular hair care products (some of which have been benched thanks to its awesomeness.) I will be buying myself a full sized version ASAP.

I go through toner like nobody’s business. This one is formulated for dry and very dry sensitive skin, whereas my skin type is more combination to oily. But it’s refreshing, it smells wonderfully clean and slightly fruity and it does a great job of removing the last remnants of my long-lasting foundation and freshening up my skin in preparation for moisturiser.

Lovely and light, my skin just soaks this up. It smells fresh and creamy and doesn’t leave an oily residue. Definitely an ideal day cream or light body moisturiser. It’s currently being carried around in my handbag because this cold weather is drying my skin like crazy and I hate the feeling of having to wash my hands after applying moisturiser. It’s a keeper.

Last up is a cute pink ‘power balancing’ bracelet that supposedly helps to support strength and flexibility. Hmmm. I don’t know about that. But I’m willing to give it a try! Besides which, it’s pink, it looks super-cute on my arm and it goes well with my current arm party fetish. Any additional strength, balancing, energy or radioactive super-powers are just a bonus! (Call me an optimist, but hey, if it gives me a little boost or makes me think that I’ll have a bit of extra energy for the day, then where’s the downside?)

Ultimately, I’m impressed. Glossybox is certainly worth a try. It’s pretty, big and jam-packed. If you feel like getting a guaranteed goodie bag delivered to your doorstep once a month, I say go right ahead!

Each box can be tailored to suit your unique beauty personality, just update your beauty profile, choose the types of products you’d like to receive and they’ll send you a different selection based on your needs.

Glossybox is available for just $14.95 a month (with free delivery) from www.glossybox.com.au, and you can cancel your subscription at any time.

Have you tried a beauty box? What did you think? What’s the BEST beauty box product you’ve ever received?

Unexpected Kindness

As those of you who follow me on twitter or instagram will know, I’ve spent most of the past week out on photo-shoots for my magazine Luxury Weddings. Shoots are one of my favourite parts of my job. On occasion, the gown designers will stop by to say hello and watch as we photograph their gowns. This photo-shoot was no different, and I had the pleasure of chatting with two incredible designers: Lora Eliss of Lora Eliss Couture and Patty Panatou of Basilica Couture. When Patty returned later, to retrieve her gown, she surprised and delighted both me and my colleague Kimberlee with some unexpected kindess. She brought with her a thank you gift: two beautifully packaged Badgley Mischka bags.

The contents of which were a beautiful Glamorous Shower Gel and Glamorous Body Lotion. What a wonderful gift! And even more so because it was completely unexpected. They smell absolutely heavenly. Like softly crushed rose petals scattered in the rain. Floral and fresh and deliciously decadent. I can’t wait to use mine!

It’s the little things that make a big difference to me. Saying thank you, smiling, being friendly and surprising people with unexpected kindness. It made my week.

How was your week lovelies? Were you blessed with some unexpected kindness? Or did you surprise someone else with a spontaneous gesture? Let me know. Leave me a note, stop by Facebook or tweet me, I’d love to hear your stories.

November Favourites

November has been a huge month for me! So many new finds, new friends and new favourites. I’ve dubbed these “beautygrams” – instagrams that feature some of my top products from this month.
This mini nail polish haul from Miki was a fun discovery. At only $2.95 a pop (on sale), these little gems were a bargain. I wasn’t expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised to find the polish full of colour, easy to apply and reasonably long lasting. My nails usually chip after about a day at work, I got a solid three and a half before they even started showing signs of wear.
The powder blue polish was an instant hit with me, it made my (fake) tan pop and got plenty of compliments. The perfect statement nail colour for summer. The super teeny brush on these polishes means you can paint quite daintily and carefully. I didn’t even need to use the “q-tip dipped in remover” trick to tidy up! The image above shows two coats.

I’m completely addicted to Nivea’s Fruity Shine Lip Gloss in Strawberry (RRP $3.98). It’s my go-to product for beautiful moisture, a sweet fruity scent and a super pretty flush of colour that stays for hours. I love the colour because it’s like a deeper, prettier version of my lip colour (which is fairly pale), so it always looks fresh and natural.

A shopping trip to find the perfect BB Cream became a bit of a beauty revelation when I discovered Napoleon Perdis NP Set Lipsticks. I’ve never owned one before and I’m delighted with the colours I chose: Minneapolis (a bright coral pink) and Boston (a creamy ginger). It also turned out that Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector (RRP $13.95) BB Cream was the perfect one for me. Not only is it cost-effective, the medium shade is a perfect match to my skin. I will give proper reviews of these three products soon, I promise!

All that glitters is certainly gold and my newly balayaged locks have encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. I’m wearing gold for the first time! This Orly Nail Polish “Luxe” (RRP $18.95) made my hands feel expensive. I couldn’t stop flashing them around! This polish is wonderfully lasting and packed with shimmer – it could almost be mistaken for a foil, except for the slight grain in its finish. But I think this makes it look even more like real gold. Definitely a fun and easy way to give yourself a pick-me-up.

I actually have quite fine hair, a fair bit of it, mind you, but extra volume is always appreciated. My favourite for va-va-voom volume is Schwarzkopf’s Extra Care Insant Volume Powder (RRP $8.99). This baby really has some kick! Tap some into your hands and dust into your roots for instant bombshell hair. It also gives your hair that awesome second-day lived-in look.

As November turned up the heat, I decided to lose the heavy coverage foundation on weekends and go for a more natural, but still polished, look instead. Thank goodness for Le Tan’s Face Tan (RRP $7.99). I’m a long-time devotee of their Fast Tan Mousse and I’m just as impressed with the new face tan. Now my face matches my body and has the same gorgeous summery look, without all the mess of melting off foundation and the feel of sweating underneath it.

Big thank you to Madison magazine for introducing me to Butter London Polish in Trout Pout (RRP $19.95). It is the perfect summer pedi polish. A combination of hot coral and hot pink, but without being over-the-top. I love the colour so much that I’m wearing it on toes and fingers at the moment. I’ve actually been trying to find a lipstick that matches! My twitter friends have kindly given their suggestions, I’m close to making a purchase and I’ll let you know how my trout pout lip goes!

How has your November been? Are you ready for the silly season? What are your favourite products at the moment? Let me know! Leave your comments or tweet me.

Please note: as the above images have been put through instagram filters, some of the colours may not appear exactly as they are.
