And hello summer! It’s my last week at work and I’m looking forward to some time off with friends and family over Christmas. I’m heading to the Hunter Valley for a few days over the break and I can’t wait. Fresh food, good conversation, swimming, running around barefoot, the sunshine in my eyes, driving with the windows down, staying up late… Ahhh bliss. What are you doing for Christmas? What’s your favourite thing about summer? Let me know!

Disneyland Photo Diary

The last time I was at Disneyland I was eighteen. I was travelling with a huge bunch of other eighteen year olds from all over the world. We had an absolute blast, as you can probably imagine. It was just as much fun, if not more, this time. I honestly smiled and laughed the entire time.

I am writing this from an eighth floor hotel room just around the corner from Union Square in San Francisco. I think the last time this place was renovated was in the forties. We just flew in this morning and while there’s no air conditioning, and the elevator rattles a little, I’m delighted to find there is a solid, speedy (and complimentary) internet service available. Hallelujah! I’m living on free wifi at the moment.

It’s such a beautiful night. My tiny little desk looks out the window, which I’ve opened to let in a cool breeze. The curtains are fluttering just a little, and I can hear the city breathing outside. I have so many more posts to write and so many more stories to share, but for now I’ll leave you with the happiest place on earth.

Images (from top to bottom): Me & The Boy in front of Fantasyland // A drum-kit playing Mickey Mouse entertains everyone (me included) during the parade // Yes, I rode the carousel like a big kid. And yes, I waved. It was awesome // This nice man said “hello” to me, and I told him his pants reminded me of sheepskin from home. He responded with a drawling “They’re act-tually made out of yak skin!” It made me giggle // The Haunted Mansion all dressed up for Halloween // Halloween lights dancing on all the trees // Playing tourist at Disney’s California Adventure Park // I bet you can’t tell where the real buildings end and the backdrop begins… in Hollywood Land // More beautiful Halloween lanterns // Climbing around inside the faux natural maze created by Disney inside California Adventure Park’s ‘Grizzly Peak’ // Wearing a tan and a smile after hopping off the rollercoaster at Paradise Pier // The Magic Kingdom by star light.

New in this week

I’ve been on a bit of a spending ban tight budget lately, since I paid for my flights and accommodation for my month long trek around the United States. I’m trying to keep to essentials only, which is rather difficult for someone who tends to buy things based on excitement, love, hype, the fact that I “neeeeed it” and the sheer unadulterated joy of having something new.

But these are a few little lovelies that I picked up this week. The FCUK shorts just screamed “wear me in California” — making them an essential travel buy, the Sugar Baby Tan Enhancing Shimmer Oil was a smart purchase, it does two jobs in one: moisturise and tan enhance (I’m already churning through it) and the pastel polishes and floral print nail file were part of a seriously awesome gift bag from the incredibly talented ladies at Hello Darling.

I’m very lucky to work in a job where magazines are ‘research’. This Vogue cover simply knocked my socks off, Lana Del Rey looks positively ethereal, yet somehow has a sense of the girl-next-door. Kurv magazine is a new discovery: I am blown away. Their shoots alone have offered many hours of contented swooning and inspiration.

The MAC Lipglass was a belated birthday gift from my beautiful friend Sarah, she chose “The Wee Coquette” because she knew I was lusting after a soft pink shade to add depth and shine to my pout. Finally, the YSL Rouge Pur Couture, I must admit… I purchased myself. Gasp! I tried to restrain myself. And I succeeded for several weeks. But I just couldn’t wait any longer to try this miracle lipgloss. And I was certainly not disappointed. In fact, I’m ecstatic. A review will follow soon. As will enthusiastic purchasing of every shade available the minute I hit US soil.

Happy start-of-the-week lovelies, I hope you all have an amazing one!

Adventures in Portrait-Land or “How I ended up in front of the camera”

I’m a huge fan of iPhoneography. And selfies. And Instagram. Seriously, I live to snap. But there’s something super special about having your portait taken by a professional photographer. And having your hair and makeup done professionally too. Which was why when I got the opportunity to participate in a Portrait Couture session with Simona Janek of gm photographics, I jumped at the chance. I just got the images back — and I’m oh-so-breathlessly happy with them! I just couldn’t wait to share. We shot four different “looks” (there are more pics to come) and strangely enough, my favourite series of images is the one where Simona and I allowed ourselves a bit more freedom in the brief and what the finished product would look like.

I had simply said “I want it to be more free” and sent her one of my favourite Pinterest boards, Daydreams & Whimsy, as inspiration. Simona was incredible in getting me to move: at times I almost felt like I was dancing, at others I felt like a mime, and at yet others I felt quite awkward. I know myself when I’m trying to get a decent shot for Instagram or twitter, I can take loads before I get a good one, so the fact that Simona did all this with me (read: totally awkward and definitely-not-a-model) was even more impressive.

During the shoot, I became hyper-aware of my body, the way I was standing and what I was doing with my face. I’m certain that I had my directions backwards for almost the entire session, since Simona kept using the phrase “your other left”, but we got there in the end. I am so happy with the finished product, it’s wonderful to have actual prints in my hands for a change… and I picked up a few little tricks for posing for the camera too!

* Relax your face by smiling softly, or by blowing some air out through your lips
* Keep your body at an angle to the camera and put your weight on your back foot to slim down your hips
* Hold your head level, then drop your chin and push it forward. It’s a bit like impersonating a turtle, but it enlogates the neck and gets rid of a potential double chin
* If you’re sitting, scoot forwards on the chair a bit to make your legs look longer
* The good old hand on the hip is a favourite for a reason: it draws the eye towards your waist, ultimately stretching you out.

Happy Friday all, I hope you have an amazing weekend!

Style Session: 5 Minutes with Sandi Sieger of Onya Magazine

This is something a little new for Lashes & Lattes. I am constantly surrounded by incredible women. Women who are not only successful, brainy, witty and talented, but who are also inspirational, super stylish and wonderfully friendly. I decided it was time to share a few of these amazing people with you.

Meet Sandi Sieger, the Editor in Chief of Onya Magazine.

Tell me a little bit about yourself. What do you love? What’s your day-to-day like? Do you have any obsessions?

I’m the Editor-In-Chief of Onya Magazine and the General Manager at White Echo. I also blog at In The Thick Of It. My days are generally pretty jam-packed. Depending on the day, I could be in meetings, running around completing errands (or running up and down the streets in Melbourne’s city), organising any manner of event or putting an idea into action, or – and these are my favourite days – I’m in front of the computer, working away; writing, editing, managing social media accounts and planning strategy.

I love colour; things that are bright and vibrant and joyful. I love being organised; everything having a place. I love shoes. And handbags. I love words. I love being inspired. I love writing. I love my dog, Leo.

I actually find I don’t have that much time to procrastinate – and I kind of think it’s a cop out. Procrastination, as a writer, usually comes from having no confidence or belief in what you’re doing. The only time I don’t feel like writing is when I’m not looking forward to writing about a particular topic or for a particular client. It’s like people that wait for inspiration to strike; inspiration doesn’t strike you, you create it. You just get on with it. In saying that, I love scheduling time out to relax and wind-down – especially on weekends. I can whittle away hours reading (books, blogs or magazines). I love shopping (especially with my niece, Isabella), cooking, playing in my wardrobe (seriously, it’s my favourite room) and hanging out with my amazing husband, Kaz. And I actually really like working.

I’m obsessed with stationary – I’ve banned myself from buying anymore until I use up everything I have. I also have a small lip gloss fetish; Lanolips and Sohum are my favourites.

How would you describe your style in three words?

Classic. Contemporary. Bright.

(That was actually much harder to pin down than I thought. I love dresses and classic silhouettes and cuts. I also love modern fabrics and prints and edgy pieces. And I adore anything slightly wild, just a liitle bit too loud is bang on for me).

What are your five fashion essentials for the work week?

1. Dresses – I love dresses, the more colourful the better. Some days, it’s a more polished look I prefer, other days it’s more casual, but dresses, in their many forms, are my favourite things in the whole world.

2. Stockings – A must during Winter, I can’t cope with bare legs on chilly days.

3. Platform heels – The most comfortable way to look impeccably stylish, but still be able to walk at the end of the day.

4. Oversized handbags – Big enough to carry the laptop, iPad, notepad, pens, camera, lipsticks and glosses, hair clips and all the rest of it…

5. A smile – Corny, yes. But it’s the best way to brighten any outfit.

What are your five fashion essentials for the weekend?

1. Sportswear – I love getting out on the weekend and walking around the gorgeous hills area where I live, hitting up some bush tracks, going for a run or heading to a bikram yoga class. I’ve got a serious Lululemon and Lorna Jane addiction – like stationary, I’ve banned myself from further pieces until what I currently own wears out. Both brands are just so incredibly comfy, practical and still stylish.
2. Boots – There’s something about popping on a pair of slouchy or ankle cut boots that just screams ‘weekend’ to me.

3. T-shirt dresses – Comfy, but can be dressed up or down.

4. Scarves – Especially during the cooler months.

5. Thongs – Seriously, when the weekend hits, it’s all about casual for me – unless I have to be somewhere that calls for something more.

Where do you shop?

Where don’t I shop?

I’m a big fan of Cue – I love that most of their range is Australian made and I’m supporting our fashion industry. I also love that their clothing is classic and really good quality – I have clothing from Cue that’s six years old that is still in perfect condition. Their styles are long-lasting – I’m not really about fads – and their clothes are comfy to wear whilst still looking super polished on.

I’m also fond of picking up handmade or locally designed pieces whenever I can – again, supporting our designers and industry – but also because I don’t like wearing the exact same thing as everyone else. Vintage stores are superb, for this exact reason, plus you can take a vintage piece and alter it in some way to make it slightly more modern. I’m a big fan of markets – especially the Paddington Markets in Sydney; whenever I’m there, I always spend most of my Saturday picking up vintage handbags or gorgeous one-off dresses and knits.

I love Alannah Hill and Hannii for dressing up and I’m a huge fan of Nine West for shoes. I somehow end up picking up a couple of pairs every season; they do the best platform heel – always a different style – but always gorgeous (and comfy).

I’ll pretty much buy anything that’s bold and bright if I like the style. I love buying bits and pieces from lots of different places and mish-mashing them up.

What’s your favourite way to style up a simple ensemble?

Shoes. They can make or break an outfit.

If you’re having a bit of a “blah” day, or you’re rushed, do you have any quick fixes or easy peasy outfits that make you feel instantly polished?

Usually a knit dress (in Winter) or a t-shirt dress (in Summer) that I can throw a cardi over or some stockings under. Add platform heels or wedges and I’m done.

Beauty wise, blush always makes me perk up (even when I’m not feeling so perky) and filling in my eyebrows with a pencil just seems to frame my whole face and make me look done, even when I’m feeling very undone on the inside.

My favourite fragrance ever is Limequat from Sohum. It always sets me straight. Their gorgeous boutique is located in Sassafras, in the Dandenong Ranges, and it’s heaven.

What items do you splurge on, and what do you save on?

I mainly try and support Australian designers, but I do buy from other designers too. (I’m a sucker for Kate Spade, when I can get my hands on some). I try and spend more money on good quality items that I want to last – coats, jackets, shoes, handbags – and less on basics. You can always pick up basics – like white shirts and slouchy tees – so I like to invest in classic or statement pieces – like a gorgeous coat, or a pretty handbag. Some people like to cut back on accessories – but accessories are the very things that look cheap when they’re produced cheaply. Good quality shoes and handbags will lift a casual outfit.

I love my beauty products – Jurlique, Mirenesse, Endota, Lush, MOR and Sohum are my favourites.

Name three items every woman should own?

A handbag they are proud to carry. Shoes that makes them stand taller – these may not necessarily be high heels. One fail safe item of clothing that always fits and always brings a smile to the face – this will vary from woman to woman, for me, it’s a yellow Gorman dress that always looks just right.

p.s Per my Disclosure Policy, Sarah and I were invited to stay at the QT Hotel Gold Coast free of charge. The fact that I did not pay for the accommodation or spa experience (which you’ll hear more about soon!) has not affected my opinion. I only mention — and rave about — things I truly enjoy. I have not been compensated for mentioning the hotel.

Who’s a spoilt girl? SS Beauty Swap Haul

A weekend or two ago I met my beautiful friend Samantha of SamanthaSmith.com.au for a coffee in the city. I love an excuse for brunch. Any excuse will do. We just needed a catch-up, ooh and we took the opportunity to exchange our goodies for SS Beauty Swap (a swap that Samantha arranged for Aussie beauty bloggers.) It was kind of like Christmas. And my birthday. All wrapped up into one wonderful coffee-laden, berry tart and chocolate volcano cake-filled morning. Samantha chose some killer picks for me. And being the big kid that I am, I couldn’t wait to get them home and play with them!

From top: Face of Australia Sheer Gloss Lip Crayons in Macaron, Cupcake and Sundae, Maybelline The Falsies Flared Mascara in Blackest Black, Essence Lipstick in All About Cupcake, Maybelline Colour Tattoo in Too Cool and Audacious Asphalt, L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Nail Colours in Parisian Rooftops and Perle De Jade.

And one gorgeous Sportsgirl Pout Line lip pencil in Beauty Queen, who in my over-excitable state, I forgot to photograph was too shy to have her picture taken. The lovely S also gifted me a legendary chunky gold bracelet from Colette, which I am just loving to death. (She’s the pretty one on the left.)

My beauty cupboard feels refreshed, renewed and re-wonderful-ised. (Yes, I made up a word. Deal with it.) I am so overjoyed with my swap goodies! Samantha chose things that I really wanted but either hadn’t had the time to purchase, or hadn’t been able to find. Her colour choices are just so ME. And I am already wearing almost everything (and those things that I’m not wearing I have plans for…) *finger pyramid of evil contemplation*

I can’t wait to share my reviews with you!

Did you participate in SS Beauty Blog Swap? What excellent goodies are currently re-wonderful-ising your beauty cupboard? Let me know!

5 ways to easily (and cheaply) work a trend into your wardrobe

Coco Chanel said “Fashion changes, but style endures.” Amen sister. It’s easy to get carried away with fashion: what’s hot, what’s new, what’s next, and forget that the very best clothes and accessories are the ones that suit you and your lifestyle. However, not getting involved in fashion can be downright boring. So here are some easy (and cheap) ways to work a trend into your existing wardrobe.

The iPhone Case: you take it everywhere with you, it’s always in your hand, so why not make it a fashion statement? Neon Catherine iPhone Case from Forever New $14.99

The Arm Candy: Quick, easy and cheap. Pop a brightly coloured cuff or statement bracelet on with your watch and a few other complementary pieces and boom, you’re rocking an arm party and you’re bang on trend. Diamonte Stud Stretch Cuff from Colette by Colette Hayman $12.95.

The Scarf: keep yourself warm and work a trend at the same time? Yes please! 3D Handstitch Scarf in Chartreuse from Sportsgirl $29.95

The Inexpensive Knit: There are plenty of chain stores around that get their trend pieces on the shelves quickly. Keep an eye out for inexpensive (but relatively good quality) knitwear in key fashion colours. Easy to pair with skirts, pants, jeans and leggings, a knit will ensure you look like fash pack material with minimal effort. Neon Yellow Knit from Blockout Clothing in Queen Victoria Building $49.95 (not available online yet, but similar here).

The Nail Polish: Feel like just dipping your fingertips into a trend, rather than jumping in head-first? No problem. Lavish some attention (and some fashion cred) onto your nails! NYC Nail Lacquer in Glow Worm $2.95 available from Coles, Woolworths and selected pharmacies.

What’s your favourite easy (and cheap) way to work a trend into your wardrobe?

7 Days of Braids

I love a good style dare. 30 Days of Lippy, 7 Days of Braids… count me in! Andrea from Fox in Flats recently challenged her readers to wear some kind of braided hairstyle every day for a full week. Talk about shaking up your hair routine!

Day 1 – The Relaxed Ombré Pulled Out Braid

How To: Braid your hair, secure it with a hair tie. Then starting at the top of the braid and moving downwards pull each section out a little to make it looser and fatter. This is a great trick for fine hair, it gives instant volume and thickness.

Day 2 – Boho Braided Outstyle
How To: This is an easy-peasy way to shake up your usual all-out style. Curl (or straighten) your hair as normal, then add a few tiny braids at the front and sides of your hair. You can pin them back for a more polished look or leave them out for an urban hippy vibe.

Day 3 – Scruffy Saturday Side Braid
How To: Take a section at the front of your hair (or just off-centre) about three fingers wide, and divide it into three, begin the braid and gradually pull hair in from both the left and right until you get to your ear, then finish by plaiting the end. Secure with a hair tie. Starting at the top and moving down to the bottom gently pull each segment out a little to fatten and loosen up the braid.

Day 4 – The Fishtail Braided Cage of Curls
How To: Curl your hair, then sweep all of it to one side and gather it into the shape of a ponytail. Taking a slim section of hair from underneath on the left side bring it up and over the ponytail, then do the same with the right. The key to the fishtail braid is small sections and taken from underneath. Keep the braid very loose and soft and make sure you keep a decent chunk of curls in the section inside the fishtail. Plait the last few strands down to the end and secure with a hair tie. Fluff up the curls underneath and ensure the end of the braid curls nicely too.

Day 5 – The Wraparound Braid
How To: Sweep all your hair over your right shoulder. Starting at the edge of your hairline just below your left ear (and around about where you feel your skull bone finish) take a section of hair approx 3cm thick and divide it into three lengthways (so the beginning of the braid faces along the back of your head). Begin to plait this section, bringing in a piece from the top and a piece from the bottom as you go. Keep the braid fairly loose so your scalp doesn’t show through. When you run out of hair, continue the plait down and over your shoulder. Secure with a hair tie.

Day 6 – The Braided Topknot (aka Braid Fail)
How To: I still haven’t mastered this one (as evidenced from the ghastly photograph) and my extensions didn’t help this look either. But basically: tip your head upside down and section out an approx. 5cm wide chunk of hair in the middle at the nape of your neck. Start like a normal braid, sectioned into three and one folded over the other, pull a piece in from each side as you go. Once you get to the crown of your head, gather the remaining hair into a high ponytail and secure with a hair tie. Twist the ponytail around itself to create a topknot and pin the ends underneath with bobby pins.

Day 7 – The Headband Braid
How To: Part your hair on the side. On the side with the most hair, divide it into three equal sections, so you have some hair near your face, some in the middle and the rest which can be left with the majority of your hair at the back. Make sure you use a comb to get your sections and divisions very straight, otherwise this can look messy. Taking the middle section, divide it into three and begin like a normal plait, one piece over the other. After you’ve done left over right and right over left once, begin to pull in small sections from either side, being sure not to go outside the section. Continue down until you get to where the hair ends just above your ear, then continue with a normal plait down to the ends. Secure with a hair tie. Brush the rest of your hair out so it’s nice and soft and shiny!

Could you wear braids for seven days straight? Have you come up with any signature braided looks? Let me know. Looking for some inspiration? Check out my Hair Inspiration board on Pinterest.

Rosie xox

Kitschy Cool Bird Blouse

Just a quick little outfit post to punctuate the working week. I bought a heavenly new floral and bird print blouse on the weekend. It was the contrast of the sharp cut, pleated neckline, power shoulder, soft feminine fabric and whimsical print that really won me over. But how to accessorise it? I decided to let the blouse shine, in all its kitschy glory. I found a few favourite accessories, a lipstick that picked up the bold sixties-like power pink in the print and a sweet little nail polish that I’ve just been dying to wear.

Choosing a few key colours in a print to highlight and accent your overall look really helps to bring it together and give it a well thought-out, cohesive and polished finish.

Blouse: Stylist, Skirt: Zara (sold out), similar here, Earrings: Sportsgirl, Watch: Gifted from a friend, similar here, Lipstick: M.A.C Sheer Supreme Lipstick in Zen Rose, Nail Polish: Essie Mint Candy Apple, with accent nail in Australis Foil Spoil.

What are you wearing this week dolls? Let me know!

Rosie xox
